What is MOST KEY for a date itinerary app?

Writer: Justin C.Justin C.

You want to read about business building and design decisions, don't you? Well...since you asked...

The most important question I need to answer as I design the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) is: what is the most critical and needed function(s) for a barebones DateSetGo app?

This is an important question because to get the first, raw version into people's hands for market validation quickly, I need to build only the key capabilities that people who are looking to plan a date need. I can get to fancy bells and whistles later. Here's a short list of things I'm considering in that regard that I think all intuitively go into DateSetGo planning a good date:

  • Simplicity - for the initial build, should just the option of restaurants (non-chain & non-fast food) and bars be the pairing?

    • Should only one option be pre-generated and presented, or multiple?

    • What are the most core preferences users care to input without creating a slog of checkboxes and inputs, or a tedious initial "profile building" first login?

  • Geolocation - how to define the specific area where the date will take place?

    • Does it start centered on the users current location? What should the default radius be? Where is it built in for a user to change the radius & location?

    • Proximate venues - does it matter if you uber across town for dinner after a show, or is walking distance important?

  • Users - Should initial suggestions stick closer to preferences first for people who know what they like, or more random suggestions because people are using the app to look for unique ideas?

In the end, obviously I want DateSetGo to be a fancy, sexy, turbo-charged, sports car of an app that gives users all the speed and functionality they desire in a sleek chassis, but until then.. I need to define what the 'scooter' version looks like. And does it need to come with a little bell?

Without further ado, your weekly suggestions:

Date Ideas

Novel: Go to an art gallery and impersonate art critics (with each person holding an opposite opinion of what you're critiquing)

Adult: Try out a mixology course together.

Youthful: Go to a trampoline park and find out how your knees are holding up.
